body segment of a tarantula. It contains vital organs and is the most fragile part of the spider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong id=\"gloss01_arboreal\">Arboreal<\/strong><br>A tarantula species that lives primarily in trees and elevated structures rather than on the ground. Some arboreal species (e.g. <em>Phormingochilus sp<\/em>.) do tend to burrow as <a href=\"#gloss01_sling\" rel=\"nofollow\">slings<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong id=\"gloss01_autotomy\">Autotomy<\/strong> (Appendotomy)<br>The ability of a tarantula to voluntarily drop an appendage as a response to stress, defense or injury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"gloss01_b\">B<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong id=\"gloss01_book-lungs\">Book Lungs<\/strong><br>Respiratory organs located on the underside of the <a href=\"#gloss01_abdomen\">abdomen<\/a>. Tarantulas have two pairs of book lungs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong id=\"gloss01_burrower\">Burrower<\/strong><br>A tarantula that spends most of its time underground, often sealing itself in during <a href=\"#gloss01_pre-molt\">pre-molt<\/a>. In the hobby they are often called <a href=\"#gloss01_pethole\">pet holes<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"gloss01_c\">C<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong id=\"gloss01_carapace\">Carapace<\/strong><br>The hard upper part of the prosoma that protects the brain and major organs. It also houses the eyes and foveal groove.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong id=\"gloss01_chelicerae\">Chelicerae<\/strong><br>The paired mouthparts that hold the <a href=\"#gloss01_fang\">fangs<\/a> and inject <a href=\"#gloss01_venom\">venom<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong id=\"gloss01_crickets\">Crickets<\/strong><br>A common feeder insect, notorious for its smell, noise, and ability to cause problems if left unattended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"gloss01_d\">D<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong id=\"gloss01_death-curl\">Death Curl<\/strong><br>A posture where the legs are tightly tucked underneath the body. Commonly caused by severe <a href=\"#gloss01_impaction\">dehydration<\/a> or death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong id=\"gloss01_detritivore\">Detritivore<\/strong><br>An organism that feeds on waste and decaying matter, such as springtails, mites, or roaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"gloss01_e\">E<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong id=\"gloss01_enclosure\">Enclosure<\/strong><br>The container or habitat where a tarantula is kept.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong id=\"gloss01_embolus\">Embolus<\/strong><br>The tip of the mature male <a href=\"#gloss01_pedipalps\">pedipalp<\/a> used for sperm transfer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong id=\"gloss01_ecdysis\">Ecdysis<\/strong><br>The biological process of shedding the old exoskeleton (exuvium) during growth. In tarantulas, ecdysis is commonly referred to as molting and is a vulnerable period where disturbance should be avoided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong id=\"gloss01_eggs-with-legs\">Eggs with Legs<\/strong><br>A hobby slang term describing very early-stage tarantula spiderlings directly after hatching. At this stage, they resemble tiny moving eggs with legs and are largely immobile, relying on <a href=\"#gloss01_yolk-sac\">yolk<\/a> for nutrition before becoming active slings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"gloss01_f\">F<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong id=\"gloss01_fang\">Fang<\/strong><br>The hollow structure used to inject venom and subdue prey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong id=\"gloss01_feeder-insects\">Feeder Insects<\/strong><br>Live prey such as crickets, roaches, or worms offered as food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"gloss01_g\">G<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong id=\"gloss01_genus\">Genus<\/strong><br>A taxonomic rank above species, such as <em>Grammostola<\/em> or <em>Poecilotheria<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong id=\"gloss01_gravid\">Gravid<\/strong><br>Refers to a female tarantula carrying eggs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong id=\"gloss01_gbb\">GBB<\/strong><br>Abbreviation for green-bottle blue, the trivial name of <em>Chromatopelma cyanopubescens<\/em>, a popular <a href=\"#gloss01_arboreal\">arboreal<\/a> species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Gut Loading<\/strong><br>The practice of feeding nutrient-rich foods to <a href=\"#gloss01_feeder-insects\">feeder insects<\/a> before offering them to a tarantula. This improves the nutritional value of the prey and helps provide vitamins and minerals that the tarantula would otherwise miss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"gloss01_h\">H<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong id=\"gloss01_hemolymph\">Hemolymph<\/strong><br>The tarantula equivalent of blood. Loss can be fatal, especially from injuries to the <a href=\"#gloss01_abdomen\">abdomen<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong id=\"gloss01_hide\">Hide<\/strong><br>A structure that allows the tarantula to feel secure and reduce stress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"gloss01_i\">I<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong id=\"gloss01_impaction\">Impaction<\/strong><br>A condition where the tarantula cannot expel waste properly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong id=\"gloss01_invertebrate\">Invertebrate<\/strong><br>An animal without a backbone, including tarantulas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong id=\"gloss01_instar\">Instar<\/strong><br>A developmental stage between molts in arthropods. Each time a tarantula completes <a href=\"#gloss01_ecdysis\">ecdysis<\/a> (molting), it enters a new instar. Early instars (<a href=\"#gloss01_sling\">slings<\/a>) are more sensitive to dehydration and environmental changes, due to the lack of a <a href=\"#gloss01_waxy-coating\">waxy coating<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"gloss01_j\">J<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong id=\"gloss01_juvenile\">Juvenile<\/strong><br>A tarantula that is no longer a <a href=\"#gloss01_sling\">sling<\/a> but not yet fully grown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"gloss01_k\">K<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong id=\"gloss01_key-lock-system\">Key Lock System<\/strong><br>The concept that male and female reproductive organs must match for successful mating. In tarantulas, stridulation is used as a defensive warning signal and can sometimes be heard as a faint hissing or rasping sound when the spider feels threatened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong id=\"gloss01_substrate\">Substrate<\/strong><br>The material covering the enclosure floor. Substrate determines how well the tarantula can burrow and how well the enclosure holds humidity. Tarantula venom is a complex mixture primarily made up of proteins and peptides, including neurotoxins. For humans it is generally not medically significant and rarely dangerous, unless a person has a severe allergic reaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong id=\"gloss01_ventilation\">Ventilation<\/strong><br>Airflow within an enclosure. Ventilation is crucial to prevent stagnant air.
